German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder arrived late Saturday in Egypt, the first part of a Middle East tour expected to deal with Iraq and the Arab-Israeli conflict, airport officials and diplomats said.

Egyptian Prime Minister Atef Ebeid welcomed Schroeder at the Cairo airport, officials said.

A German diplomat said Schroeder would hold official talks Sunday with Ebeid and Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak.

Meanwhile, he and Mubarak will also inaugurate on Sunday in Cairo the first privately funded German university abroad, and he will hold at the end of the visit a press conference, the diplomat added, according to AFP

The German leader is expected to leave Sunday to Saudi Arabia and from there travel to the United Arab Emirates. (Albawaba.com)
