Germany has credited Tunisia 73.6 million Deutsche marks for upgrading its private enterprises, reported PanAfrica News Agency (PANA), quoting an official source.

The funds were made available through the German Reconstruction Bank, whose financial commitments to Tunisia had reached about 2.3 billion marks to service priority areas such as the environment, modernization of private enterprises and vocational training, said PANA.

Tunisia is the first country that signed a bilateral agreement with the European Union in 1995 aimed at the gradual setting-up of a free-trade area by 2008.

Using bilateral and multilateral aid from EU countries, Tunisia implemented a scheme called "upgrading program", that targeted the modernization of its enterprises to enable them face competition from European products after the lifting of all required trade barriers, said the agency - Albawaba.com
