Germany Ready to Supply UAE with Armored Cars

Germany is getting ready to supply the United Arab Emirates (UAE) with 64 armored reconnaissance vehicles despite opposition within the government, Stern magazine said Wednesday.

In an advance extract before publication Thursday, the weekly said the German government was reckoning on approval this month by the federal Security Council, a body headed by Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder.

According to Stern, the Greens, junior coalition partner of Schroeder's Social Democrats, were not expected to put up any significant resistance.

The text said that even the Greens' defense spokeswoman Angelika Beer was falling into line with the defense ministry, which is headed by the Social Democrat Rudolf Scharping.

Yet only in March had Beer told the magazine that there was no question of the Greens approving the sale of such armed vehicles, it pointed out.

Stern said that one could expect renewed discontent at the Greens grassroots level, as the supply of the vehicles to the UAE could not be reconciled with the German government's export guidelines - (AFP)
