The widely-traveled Giovanni Trapattoni was named as the new national coach by the Italian Football Federation in Rome Thursday.
Trapattoni takes over from Dino Zoff who resigned Tuesday having taken the Italians to the final of Euro 2000 on Sunday only to lose 2-1 to France in extra time.
Trapattoni has been linked with the post several times and is the most successful Serie A coach ever.
He has won eight league titles, one European Cup, the UEFA Cup three times, and the Cup Winners Cup once during spells at AC Milan, Juventus and Inter Milan.
The 61-year-old also won the German Bundesliga in 1997 at Bayern Munich before taking Fiorentina into the Champions League in 1998 – (AFP)
