Hamas spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin said Thursday he could neither confirm nor deny that his group was involved in the deadly car bomb blast in a busy Jerusalem market, but said Hamas did not aim to hurt civilians.

"I cannot confirm or deny that Hamas was responsible," Yassin told reporters in Gaza City. "Our policy is one of not hurting civilians. We don't like to hurt civilians, and this is very clear."

But he said the Palestinian Intifada, or uprising, that has raged across the occupied territories for five weeks would continue.

"The Intifada will continue, and what happened today on the ground confirms that the Intifada is on going and all the agreements are meaningless," he said, referring to the overnight truce agreement between Israel and the Palestinians aimed at putting an end to the bloodletting -- GAZA CITY (AFP)
