Sheikh Ali Tehrani, the brother-in-law of Iran's supreme spiritual guide Ali Khameini, tried twice to kill himself in prison, Iranian newspapers said Friday.
Tehrani, who was an opponent of the Iranian regime, tried last week to overdose on sleeping pills but was saved at the last minute by doctors at Evin Prison, where he has been imprisoned since last year.
Several days later, the 76-year-old Tehrani hurt himself by driving a nail into his chest, which led prison authorities to send him to an outside hospital, the Bahar newspaper said.
Tehrani, an Islamist, lived in exile in Iraq from 1984 to 1995, where he denounced "the ayatollahs' despotism" over Iraqi radio.
In 1995, a physically weak Tehrani turned himself in to the Iranian authorities, who put him under house arrest at his family's suburban Tehran home. He was sentenced to a four-year imprisonment later - TEHRAN (AFP)
