InterContinental Hotels Group, the world's largest hotel operator, announced today that Clive Smith has been appointed as General Manager of the InterContinental Lusaka.

The hospitality professional, with more than 15 years of proven senior international management at premier properties, is pleased to join the team at the long-standing InterContinental Lusaka, which is a true landmark of the Zambian capital and is regarded for its high levels of service and facilities that address both business and leisure travelers.

Described by colleagues as an excellent leader, motivator and communicator with high skills in standards, finance and a track record of achieving results, Smith moves to the position from his previous role as Resident Manager of the InterContinental Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. Smith originally joined the InterContinental Hotels Group fold in 2000, when he was the Resident Manager of the Holiday Inn Mayfair in London, UK.

“Both of the previous positions I have held with InterContinental Hotels Group has provided me with wonderful experience and background to take on this exciting and challenging new role in Lusaka. It is wonderful to be stationed at the InterContinental Lusaka, which is a true landmark in the Zambian capital of Lusaka,” said Smith.

As the largest hotel operator in the Middle East, InterContinental Hotels Group has more than 70 InterContinental, Crowne Plaza and Holiday Inn properties across the UAE, Oman, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Kenya, Eritrea, Zambia and Gabon.

Enjoying playing squash, golf and Tae Kwon Do, Smith is also passionate about snow-boarding and chess. With the move from Saudi Arabia to Zambia, he will also be able to maintain his monthly desert trips when he has time-off from providing the ultimate in accommodation, service and direction to the country’s most popular tourist sites.

Located in the diplomatic district – close to the commercial area of Lusaka – Smith says: “Whether visitors are here for business or pleasure, they can be assured of enjoying warm Zambian culture and hospitality.”

With most visitors flocking to Zambia to visit one of the world’s seven wonders – the Victoria Falls – the staff at the hotel are always prepared to help guests with arranging visits to some of the most un-spoilt game reserves in Africa. The hotel provides information on how to book excursions out of Lusaka, as well as advice on places of interest within Lusaka.

Offering the full range of accommodation – from superior rooms to the opulence of the Presidential Suite – guests can be assured of comfort with all rooms air-conditioned and fitted out to offer 5-star standards. “With the rise of business travelers, all rooms have Internet connectivity and built in adapters and in my new role I am to increase the use of the property with the international business community,” said Smith.

Commenting on Smith’s appointment, Chris Moloney, Chief Operating Officer, InterContinental Hotels Group, Middle East and Africa, said: “At InterContinental Hotels Group we are always pleased to be able to fill senior roles with people from our own team who have gained wonderful experience. We are confident that Clive will be a valued addition to the team in Lusaka.”
