Iranian president Mohammad Khatami is expected to visit Pakistan next month in a sign of warming ties between the two countries after the end of Taliban rule in Afghanistan, said agencies.

“We hope he will visit in the second week of next month,” a spokesman for the Iranian embassy in Islamabad was quoted as saying.

Iran and Pakistan were at loggerheads with each side supporting a rival in the Afghani civil war since Taliban militia took power in 1994. Iran used to support the ousted government of Burhanuddin Rabbani and the North Alliance.

Pakistan has recognized the new interim government in Kabul, which is dominated by alliance figures. (Albawaba.com)
