IRAN: Ahmadinejad calls for unity

According to IRNA, president-elect Mahmoud Ahmadinejad here Tuesday called upon members of Tehran Islamic City Council to respect people, appreciate the opportunity provided for rendering services to them and the Islamic Revolution and keep on their unity and integration.

Speaking at the Tehran Islamic City Council meeting, he underlined that given the opportunity provided for taking measures in the public interest, the working policies of the Municipality should not change once the officials in charge are replaced by others.

Turning to Tehran Islamic City Council as a model for other councils, he assimilated its activities to a tree, whose branches were quickly spread all across the nation, changed the general attitude and revolutionized the measuring criteria.

"Irrespective of who won the election, the significant point is to change the approach of the community and the trend of urban management," he added.

The former Tehran mayor called upon the council members to keep on their authority and urged that the principle of rendering service to the public should continue.

"We are commissioned with a serious mission. We do not belong to ourselves, but do rather belong to generations. Given that our Islamic Revolution belongs to humanity, we are bound to develop and present it to the human community," he added.

Ahmadinejad pointed to the capital city of Tehran as a utopia of the world Muslims and said that since a great number of people have turned their eyes towards it, the greatest potentials should be used to improve its urban structure.

The president-elect appreciated the sincere efforts and services of Tehran Islamic City Council and referred to his two-year term in Tehran Municipality as the best and most memorable time of his lifetime.

He thanked the mass media reporters and municipality employees for their cooperation over the past two years.
