Iranian police arrested a five-man team of drug smugglers in the city of Karaj just west of the capital, the official IRNA news agency reported Wednesday.
It said police also confiscated nearly 200 kilograms (440 pounds) of opium.
Iran is a major transit route for drug producers in neighboring Afghanistan and Pakistan shipping their product to markets in Europe and the Gulf.
Officials announced this week they would deploy two elite police regiments along the border with Afghanistan in a bid to clamp down on the drug trade.
Last year 174 police officers and 740 smugglers were killed in clashes, according to official statistics – TEHRAN (AFP)
