Iranian President Mohammad Khatami said in Tehran Sunday

evening that Washington should apologize for the destruction and absence of respect it has shown upon holy Muslim sites in Iraq.

Addressing a joint meeting of his cabinet ministers and

governors-general of different provinces, he said one cannot remain silent in the face of the alarming developments in war-stricken Iraq, IRNA news agency reported.

Condemning the sacrilege committed by US occupying forces on Muslim holy shrines in Iraq, the Iranian President stressed that world Muslims, in particular Shiites, will not remain silent in the face of such aggression.

The United States is currently pursuing dangerous policies that are threatening peace in the region and the entire world more than at any other time, President Khatami highlighted, according to the official agency.

Washington, on the pretext of pursuing a "war against terrorism", is interfering in the domestic affairs of other states, he explained, adding that US discriminatory policies are fueling extremism and violence in the world.

Citing the increase in "terrorist strikes" in various parts of the world, he said Washington's continued support for the terrorist regime in Tel Aviv and its occupation of Iraq are two of the biggest mistakes made by American officials. (Albawaba.com)
