The Iranian nuclear reactor of Bushehr on the Gulf, which is being built by Russia, is 40 percent complete, Iran's ambassador to Russia, Mehdi Safari, said Monday, quoted by the Interfax news agency.
Part of the reactor is to become operational in 2002, he added. A total of four reactors are to be built at the Bushehr power station at a cost of some 3.5 billion dollars (3.9 billion euros).
The United States has put heavy pressure on Moscow to end its nuclear cooperation with Iran, which Washington suspects of seeking to develop a nuclear arsenal.
But the ambassador rejected those fears and said Tehran aimed to make the region non-nuclear. He called on Washington to prove its accusations that there was an Iranian nuclear threat -- MOSCOW (AFP)
