A military court has acquitted Tehran's former police chief of charges that he violated orders when he led an attack on a student dormitory a year ago, sparking Iran's worst riots for years, reported BBC.online.
Farhad Nazari, 36, was in charge of the attack on university students who had gathered to protest at the closure of a reformist daily newspaper, Salam, said the report.
Nineteen policemen who acted under his orders were also acquitted.
The ensuing riots, the worst since the 1979 revolution, left three dead and many more injured, according to official figures.
At the time, President Khatami fiercely criticized the attack on the dormitory by riot police.
