In a first for Iraq's pharmaceutical sector, a Baghdad-based company has come up with its own version of the male anti-impotence drug Viagra, a newspaper reported Monday.

"The pill rises to the same standards as the Viagra produced by the US firm Pfizer and is 10 percent cheaper," said Hammudi Abbes al-Hamid, director of the National Pharmaceutical Industry Company.

Quoted by Nabhd al-Shabab weekly newspaper, Hamid said the Iraqi version of Viagra will be on the market "in the next two months".

In April 1999, Iraq's health ministry banned the sale of Viagra on fears that it was a health risk – BAGHDAD (AFP)
