Iraq's Deputy Premier Barham Saleh described his talks with the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad as "friendly." He added they focused on means of enhancing bilateral relations between the two countries and issues of common interest for both sides.

Mr. Saleh said in a statement, cited Sunday by SANA, that he is optimistic the two states can boost relations.

He added that there will be mechanisms for coordination between the two countries in different fields.

Saleh added Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi is looking forward to visiting Syria as soon as possible.

He added that "I have realized that the brothers in Syria have been fully keen and interested in Iraq’s security and stability… and in pushing brotherly relations forward… and readiness to solve any problem that may block those relations."
