Three Islamists who bombed a church, a hotel and Yemen's Saba news agency in the southern port city of Aden over New Year 2001 were jailed Saturday for up to six years.
Judge Mohammad Mahmud Al-Gunaidi sentenced Nasser Ali Al-Shaiba, 29, to six years, Anis Mohammad Abdu Al-Awli, 23, to two and a half years and Faris Saleh Taher Al-Essai, 19, to two years. The latter is serving a four-year sentence for his role in the bombing of the British embassy in Sanaa in October 2000. He was one of three men found guilty in July 2001 of "carrying out criminal acts designed to undermine the country's security, harm others and damage their property", according to AFP.
The Aden court acquitted a fourth man of the bombing charges. The three Islamists went on a rampage attacking a hotel where a New Year's Eve party was under way at 04:00 in the morning of January 1 followed straight after by an Anglican church. The following day they lobbed a hand grenade at a Saba office. No one was injured in the attacks that caused damage to the buildings. (Albawaba.com)
