ALBAWABA - Israel targeted and killed a military leader of Jamaa Islamiya was killed Tuesday south of Beirut, a security official told AFP.

The Lebanese Civil Defense announced today that "an Israeli drone targeted a car" near the coastal town of Damour, around 20 kilometres south of the Lebanese capital.

Rescuers and medical teams recovered one body from the vehicle, which was targeted. Sources to Al Jazeera also revealed that the person killed is a leader of the Jamaa Islamiya, which is a Lebanese Islamist group affiliated with Hamas.

Who was killed in the Israeli strike in Lebanon?

Local media in Lebanon revealed the identity of the person who was killed today in the attack in southern Lebanon. 

Lebanon 24 confirmed that Hussein Izzat Atawy, an Islamist leader, was killed in the attack. A correspondent reported that the target of the airstrike on a car in Bawarta was Hussein Izzat Atawy, from the town of Hasbaya, Marjeyoun - Hebbariyeh, born in 1968.

He is a professor at the Lebanese University and a member of the Islamic Group. 

It is worth noting that Atawy had survived an Israeli assassination attempt in January 2024, Lebanon 24 added.
