Acting Foreign Minister Shlomo Ben Ami accused the Palestinians on Friday of smashing a ceasefire accord, saying Israel had held to the conditions of the Sharm el-Sheikh truce deal.

Ben Ami called in a message to fellow foreign ministers "to use their influence with the Palestinian Authority to put an end to the violence," according to a foreign ministry statement.

He accused the Tanzim militia of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah faction of igniting violence in east Jerusalem and the West Bank on Thursday.

The Tanzim had "fired into the Jewish quarter of Gilo (east Jerusalem) and caused a very serious incident Thursday in Mount Eval," overlooking the West Bank town of Nablus, he charged.

A Jewish settler and a Palestinian were killed and 15 others wounded in a five-hour gunfight which pitted Palestinians against settlers and Israeli soldiers on the slopes of the mountain, inside Palestinian territory.

In the other camp, the Palestinian leadership said Israel was determined to continue its aggression throughout the Palestinian territories.

Six more Palestinians were killed in clashes with Israeli soldiers during violence in the West Bank on Friday, four of them in Nablus – JERUSALEM (AFP)
