Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak will meet with US President Bill Clinton in Washington after Clinton meets with Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, a top Barak aide said Saturday.

Gilad Sher, the head of Barak's cabinet, said he expected the Israeli leader to receive an invitation from Clinton soon.

"We expect one to be presented to the prime minister immediately after an affirmative response by Yasser Arafat that he indeed is going to Washington this week. I assume that a day of two afterwards, the prime minister will be also invited and would respond positively," Sher told CNN television.

White House spokesman Jake Siewert said on Friday that Clinton hoped to meet with both Barak and Arafat at the end of next week.

Top Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat, on a visit to Washington, said Friday that Arafat was prepared to meet with Clinton next week, but that Arafat and Barak would not meet face-to-face.

Barak is already scheduled to travel to Chicago next week to attend the annual convention of a Jewish-American group, an Israeli government source said earlier – JERUSALEM (AFP)
