Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) shot and killed a Palestinian man and wounded several others when protests erupted at a funeral on Friday, reported Agence France Presse.

Thousands attended the funeral, which was held in Beit Omar, near the city of Hebron. When protests broke out, some of the attendees threw rocks at the Israeli forces.

The IDF used live and rubber bullets and tear gas to quell the protests before resorting to live bullets, according to witnesses. Ziad Awad, the 30-year old victim, was shot in the back and killed.

The funeral was held for Ziad's relative, Jaafar Awad, who fell ill in prison and died shortly after his release. The protestors blamed Israel for his death.

A statement written by Palestinian Authority official Issa Qaraqe cited the prison's "medical negligence" as a cause for Awad's death.

Jaafar Awad's father said the prison officials gave his son "an injection that made him ill and totally weakened him."

Jaafar Awad was imprisoned on charges of "terrorist activity" and "membership in the Islamic Jihad." His family denies the veracity of these accusations.
