Israeli Foreign Minister David Levy on Sunday described the situation at the Camp David peace summit with the Palestinians as "very serious" as negotiators awaited the return of US President Bill Clinton.
"The situation at the summit is very serious," Levy told journalists after speaking by telephone with Prime Minister Ehud Barak, who is at Camp David.
Levy, who is acting prime minister, gave no further details, saying only: "We will know more in the next 24 hours, but for the moment we still don't know what will emerge from the summit."
He was speaking during a visit to right-wing opposition members who are conducting at hunger strike in a tent near Barak's office to protest at any concessions to the Palestinians.
The Camp David summit almost collapsed last week over the emotive issue of the fate of Jerusalem, which both Israel and the Palestinians claim as their capital.
Last week, an Israeli minister said Barak had accepted a US bridging proposal for shared sovereignty over parts of east Jerusalem, which Israel occupied and annexed in 1967 - OCCUPIED JERUSALEM (AFP)
