Italian police have stepped up security around the premises of newspapers and political parties following a bomb blast at the left-wing paper Il Manifesto, officials said Saturday.

Police said the measures were in addition to widespread security precautions taken on Tuesday, after a bomb was found and defused on the roof of the cathedral in Milan.

Friday's explosion severely injured a far-right activist suspecting of planting the bomb at the newspaper's Rome offices.

Nobody else was hurt in the blast, which raised fears that the country could be in for a new round of terrorist attacks as it gears up to general elections next spring.

Following the discovery of the bomb in Milan, security was beefed up at all major churches, as well as at government offices, political parties, trade unions and the homes of leading judges involved in the fight against terrorism.

Plain-clothes police officers were patrolling in major churches, mingling with tourists and pilgrims, many of whom are celebrating the Catholic Church's Jubilee year, which officially ends on January 6 -- ROME (AFP)
