Spanish rider Jose-Maria Jimenez won Saturday the 197km Alps Classic cycling race.

The 29-year-old Banesto cyclist, who finished third in the 1998 Tour of Spain, beat home compatriot Fernando Escartin with reigning Tour de France champion Lance Armstrong back in third.

Armstrong had a happier time of it than the 1997 Tour de France winner Jan Ullrich who retired just minutes after starting the race.

The 26-year-old German, who won the Tour of Spain and the world time-trial championship last season after missing the Tour de France because of injury, had shown encouraging signs of returning to some semblance of form in the Tour of Germany where he finished 29th, 18 minutes off the winner Spaniard David Plaza earlier this week - (AFP)
