Jordan’s lower house of parliament is expected on Tuesday to ratify the nuclear energy draft law, which will set guidelines for all radioactive industries and activities in the country, head of the energy committee, Ali Abu Rubeiha, was quoted as saying by the Jordan Times newspaper.

"Only one quarter of the work lies ahead of us. Most probably the law will be ratified on Tuesday," Abu Rubeiha said, adding that 17 articles of 27 already had been endorsed.

The paper said that deputies on Sunday resolved a controversy spurred last week over the "necessity" of setting up an administratively and financially independent body to "monitor and oversee" nuclear and radioactive activities in the Kingdom.

The law, proposing the establishment of a Jordanian Nuclear Energy Agency, was finally agreed upon on Sunday by the majority of 49-80 deputies.

The paper said that Shafa Badran, 30 kilometers from Amman, is the best candidate to accommodate the 100-million-dollar project.

The project will be funded by a German donation to the Middle East, channeled through UNESCO. "The facility will be used for peaceful purposes like water desalination, pharmaceutical industries and nuclear medicine," Abu Rubeiha said – Albawaba.com
