In the kingdom's largest seizure of drugs, Jordanian police have seized 34 million dollars worth of illegal methadone pills and arrested six drug traffickers, the head of the anti-drug force said Saturday.
"Authorities recently seized 3,341,400 tablets of Ketagone, worth 34 million dollars, the largest quantity ever seized in Jordan," Lieutenant Colonel Tayel al-Majali told a press conference.
"Six traffickers implicated in the case, including Jordanians, have been arrested," he said, adding that the drugs were destined for an unspecified "neighboring country."
Jordan has in recent years become a favorite point of passage for drug traffickers, who ship narcotics made in Syria, Lebanon and Turkey to markets in Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Israel, and eventually Europe and North America.
The kingdom set up a 22-million-dollar fund earlier this year to fight drug trafficking and consumption over three years - AMMAN (AFP)
