Iran’s President Mohammed Khatami said Wednesday that the ground has been laid for enhancement of economic, academic and technical cooperation between Iran and the European Union (EU), reported Iran’s News Agency (IRNA.

Khatami’s remarks came during his meeting with visiting Austrian foreign minister Benita Ferrero Waldner, said the agency.

Khatami described Iran’s relations with the EU as "positive.”

Terming the status of Tehran-Vienna relations as "suitable" and "satisfactory," he said Iran has a high respect for Austria and welcomes further expansion of bilateral relations.

For her part, Waldner praised her talks with Khatami and other senior official saying they were "fruitful.”

She also underscored Austria's support for the concept of "dialog among civilizations," and said her country has definite plans for holding a conference on the subject with Iranian cooperation, IRNA said.

Waldner arrived in Tehran on Tuesday for a three-day official visit aimed at holding talks to promote bilateral ties in various fields.

Iran and Austria enjoy good relations and the two countries regularly exchange political and economic delegations.
