King Abdullah University of Science & Technology (KAUST), a Saudi-based international graduate-level research university, is using DuPont™ Corian® line of surfacing material as part of its campus development plan.
DuPont™ Corian® solid surface is one of the most versatile materials in the global market- place today. Certified by the industry-independent, non-profit Greenguard Environmental Institute, Corian® is one of the safest surfacing materials to be introduced to the market in the past 35 years. Available in over 100 colors, Corian® does not support the growth of bacteria or fungi and can be formed, molded, thermoformed, carved, routed or inlayed for diverse design requirements.
“DuPont is revolutionizing the way architects choose materials today. KAUST needed a material that could support the day-to-day needs of educators, students and faculty without compromising the institution’s environmental platform. DuPont™ Corian® was created for a lifetime of easy care. Because Corian® is nonporous; stains do not penetrate the surface. With proper cleaning, Corian® also resists the growth of mold, mildew and bacteria. Corian® is also heat and scratch resistant. It perfectly complements the development goals set by KAUST and contributes to a world-class learning and living environment,” stated Safouan Shono, DuPont Building Innovations Country Manager, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
“DuPont partnered with E.A. Juffali & Bros. Group Company, one of the largest local distributors and fabricators, to provide sustainable innovations and modern design applications of Corian® surfaces at the KAUST,” he added.
KAUST will use the material for various residential and non-residential purposes throughout its 16 million square meters campus, ranging from kitchen and laboratory worktops and reception counters to window frames and shower trays. More than 2,000 villas for university teachers and students will incorporate Aurora-colored Corian® design elements.
King Abdullah University of Science & Technology is located around 80 kilometers north of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia’s second-largest city. Its unique coastal environment covers 36 million sqm, 16 million sqm of which is dedicated to the university campus. The non-campus area comprises an offshore ecosystem that will serve as a research sanctuary. Currently undergoing phased development, the campus community is expected to grow to 20,000 residents including students, faculty, staff and their families.
