ALBAWABA - Kurdish official told AFP that authorities announced releasing 50 Syrian detainees, who were accused of being affiliated with ISIS, as a part of an amnesty deal.

The armed branch of the semi-autonomous Kurdish-led region in northeastern Syria, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), is in charge of thousands of prisoners, including hundreds of foreigners, who are believed to be affiliated with ISIS or actual members of the terrorist group.

The administration in July granted general amnesty "for crimes committed by Syrians in accordance with the law on combating terrorism as well as crimes that undermine the security of the region".

Reber Kalo, an officer with the Asayish security forces, told AFP that "50 people accused of belonging to the terrorist organization Daesh were released on Monday under the amnesty".

Out of the 1,000 to 1,500 people who are anticipated to gain amnesty, this is the second batch to be freed.

The official emphasized that "no one who participated in the fighting will be released" and that the amnesty agreement only applies to "Syrians and does not include foreigners, and is limited to those whose hands are not stained with blood".

Meanwhile, US Central Command announced the capture of an ISIS leader who was responsible for freeing ISIS fighters from a Raqqah Detention Facility in Syria.

Previously, on Aug. 29, five ISIS Foreign Terrorist Fighter detainees (Two Russians, two Afghans, and one Libyan) escaped from the Raqqah Detention Facility, CENTCOM official account on X reported.

Two escapees, Muhammad Noh Muhammad (Libyan) and Imam Abdulwahed Akhwan (Russian), were taken into custody by the SDF. The three people still on the run are Timor Talbrken Abdash (Russian), Shuab Muhammad Al-Abdli, and Atal Khaled Zar (both Afghans).

Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, CENTCOM commander, stated: "Over 9,000 ISIS detainees remain in over 20 SDF detention facilities in Syria, a literal and figurative ‘ISIS Army’ in detention. If a large number of these ISIS fighters escaped, it would pose an extreme danger to the region and beyond,".

"We will continue to work with the international community to repatriate these ISIS fighters to their countries of origin for final adjudication," Gen. Kurilla added.
