Speaker of Kuwait’s National Assembly Jassem al-Khorafi on Saturday declared that he would propose to the assembly at the next session a debate request filed by 12 deputies concerning the fire that gutted part of the oil installations in Rawadathain near the Iraqi borders.

Khorafi was quoted by the Kuwaiti official news agency (KUNA) as saying in a statement to journalists that such issue is worth to be subject to discussions and expressed hope that the government would present the required information so the assembly so they may be able to follow up on this event. Oil is a main resource for the country, Khorafi said, adding that adequate safety should be available for the personnel. He added that three hours would be specialized for debating this issue.

Asked whether the assembly would establish a panel specialized in oil affairs, Khorafi said the issue would be included in the agenda. But he added, "Formation of such a committee would not constitute a solution as this requires cooperation from the concerned personnel and departments."

He called again on the concerned departments to adopt "transparency" and make public all the relevant information. The fire at the oil installations killed four people, wounded 17 others and caused massive and costly damage.

Meanwhile, MP Mubarak al-Duwailah described the decision by oil minister Adel al-Sabeeh to tender his resignation as brave, and expressed hope that "every wrongdoing official" would follow suit. The oil minister had earlier Saturday declared that his resignation "was ready" and that he was awaiting a date for meeting the crown prince and prime minister, Sheikh Saad al-Abdullah al-Sabah, to tender it officially.
