Kuwaiti newspapers marked the 10th anniversary of the Iraqi invasion Wednesday by calling for the overthrow of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, accusing him of destabilizing the Arab world.
"The 10th invasion anniversary won't be an occasion of happiness, or of hope for Gulf and Arab stability and security, without the exit of Saddam Hussein from Arab political history," declared Al-Siyasah newspaper in a front page editorial.
"On the anniversary occasion, we and (other) Arabs should not forget that Arab national security has many enemies in the presence of Saddam at the helm of affairs in Baghdad," the paper added.
Liberal Al-Taleea weekly said that after the Gulf War in 1991, no one expected Saddam to remain in power for more than 10 months, after the catastrophes he brought on Iraq and the whole region.
"It must be understood that the suffering of the Iraqi people at the brutal hands of the regime, is as much as their suffering from the embargo," the paper said.
"So, calls to alleviate economic suffering must be accompanied with demands to break the regime's brutal grip on the Iraqi people."
Calling Saddam a nightmare, Al-Watan said Kuwaitis were looking forward to the day the Iraqi leader disappears.
"Now after a decade, they are mistaken those who think we have forgotten. We are still looking for the day the nightmare disappears," the paper said, in reference to Saddam.
All Kuwaiti dailies marked the anniversary by publishing special supplements and articles recalling the black days of the invasion – KUWAIT CITY (AFP)
