A Likud legislator has been invited to Syria in order to advance the possibility of resumed Israeli-Syrian diplomacy, and may travel to Egypt to explore opportunities for such a process, Israel Radio reported Tuesday.
The radio, which withheld the name of the Knesset member at his request, quoted sources as saying that "One of the Likud members of Knesset has been invited to Syria in order to advance a process" of Israeli-Syrian diplomacy, and that he would travel to Egypt for the purpose.
It did not give further details on whether he would meet Syrian officials there or if he would travel on to Syria.
A spokesman for Ariel Sharon's office told the radio that if the visit takes place, it will not be at the prime minister's behest.
The unnamed Likud MK said he had already been abroad at the beginning of December to explore the possibility of resumption of diplomacy. It should be noted that the Likud Party includes two members of parliament from the Druze community - Ayoub Qara and Majali Wehbeh. The latter is considered a close aide to Sharon and in the past he visited several Arab countries on Sharon's behest. (Albawaba.com)
