Foreign leaders continued to arrive at Damascus airport to attend the funeral of the late Syrian president Hafez Assad.

Some 10 heads of state, half of them from the Arab world and only one, French President Jacques Chirac, were expected.

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Palestinian president Yasser Arafat flew in together after meeting in Cairo to discuss the Middle East peace process in the light of Assad's death and Israeli-Palestinian talks resuming in Washington.

At 1200 GMT Assad's body will be flown from Mazze military air base outside Damascus to the northern coastal city of Latakia and on to Kerdaha to be buried there – DAMASCUS (AFP)
