A Palestinian gunman Tuesday afternoon opened fire in downtown Jerusalem. At least 30 Israelis wounded, some in critical condition. The attacker shot dead by policemen, Israel’s Army reported.

The attack took place at the corner of Yaffa and Rav Koch streets.

Jerusalem Police Chief Mikki Levy told reporters that the gunman was injured and killed by shots fired by policemen in the area. "Police responded very quickly to the gunfire," he conveyed, adding that "after a short chase they managed to wound and kill the attacker."

Levy added that the gunman's body was being checked for explosives.

"Israel will respond appropriately in a manner that will eliminate this ongoing threat to the people of Israel," stated Dore Gold, an adviser to Israel's Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

Gold said that no specific decision had been taken and a cabinet meeting to decide on the response had not been arranged.

"The Palestinians are determined to continue their targeting of Israeli civilians in the heart of our cities," Gold added.

Both Hamas and the military wing of the Fatah-affiliated Tanzim, the Al Aqsa Brigades, claimed reponsibility for this attack. Sources within the Palestinian Resistance Movement Hamas, identified the attacker as Saeed Ibrahim Ramadan. (Albawaba.com)
