The U.S. military said a suicide bomber has injured eight American troops visiting the mayor of violence-wracked Baqouba city. According to the AP, Iraqi security officials conveyed the bomber was wearing a police uniform and also injured at least nine civilians in Monday's attack.

The attack came as soldiers held talks with the mayor in central Baqouba, the capital of Diyala province north of Baghdad.

Meanwhile, two girls under the age of 12 were killed in Iraq on Monday when a bomb targeting an army officer went off outside their home as he left for work, police said. The bomb was planted outside the door of Captain Saadun Mohammed Ali's home in the city of Fallujah west of Baghdad and timed to go off as he left for work, police Colonel Daud Maraawi told AFP.

Ali was already in his car when the explosive went off and escaped unscathed, Maraawi said.
