A south Lebanon lawmaker Saturday pledged support to Civil Defense volunteers protesting along the country’s southern border for full-time employment.

Shebaa MP Qassem Hashem visited the volunteers, who have erected a tent only 20 meters from Israel's technical fence.

“We stand in solidarity with the Civil Defense, this national agency that sacrificed and played its necessary role in all circumstances,” the National News Agency quoted Hashem as saying.

Hashem said these workers had a right to demand full-time employment, calling on the government to implement decrees to that end.

The Civil Defense workers, who came from all across the country, had earlier said they decided to protest in the south so they don’t disrupt public life by blocking roads and burning tires.

These protests are the latest in a series of actions to demand employment for the country's ambulance drivers and firefighters.

After months of demonstrations and nationwide road closures, the government approved a decree in February that would pave the way for full-time employment and benefits for the corps of 2,400 volunteers that make up the country’s emergency first responders group.
