Farmers in the Bekaa town of Ferzol threw their crops on the streets on Sunday to protest the lack of government subsidies, which is forcing their produce to perish in warehouses, according to Daily Star.
Ibrahim Tarshishi, the head of the Bekaa Farmers Association, told the Lebanese daily that government support for the sector would help sell half a million dollars of agricultural goods per day.
He also called on the government to speed up implementing a law to subsidize farmers, which is being studied by the concerned parliamentary committees.
The government, which promised the farmers to resolve their problems six months ago, has already earmarked funds for the law. Tarshishi warned that farmers might escalate their stand-off with the government if their demands continue to be ignored while they near bankruptcy, according to the paper – Albawaba.com
