Liali Jewellery, leading retailer of diamond jewellery in the UAE, partnered with Higher Colleges of Technology, Sharjah in its first major retail initiative – the Sharjah Colleges Shopping Mall Project.
The aim of this project was to give students of the Women’s College a better understanding of this vital sector of the UAE economy by providing them with ‘hands on’ exposure to a variety of concepts that are an essential part of day to day operations in the industry. Liali Jewellery in partnership with HCT faculty introduced students to essential skills in the areas of customer service, marketing and merchandising, stock control and financial recording keeping within the context of a major UAE retail business.
In addition to building an understanding of basic business practices, the project also aimed at giving students an increased awareness about the employment opportunities within the industry so that they, as future graduates are more likely to consider this field as a career option. The project team comprised of seven young UAE national students assigned to this project by HCT, Sharjah and the senior management of Liali Jewellery from all functionalities like retail, marketing, finance and administration.
It started in February 2010 with a presentation to introduce them to Liali Jewellery, followed by an orientation tour of Liali’s head office, manufacturing facilities as well as the retail stores. One to one interviews were conducted by the young students with the Store Manager to discuss the operational management, product placement and their day to day working. This was followed by interviews with retail and marketing team to understand issues relating to branding and promotion, and finally with the Chairman of Liali Jewellery – Raed Ahmad Baker, to discuss issues related to strategic planning and the selection of sites etc., to be included in their assignment.
The project culminated with a two extravaganza – called The Mini Mall on March 23 and 24 within the college grounds for students to demonstrate their newly acquired skills to the public at large, by working side by side with their industry partners to assist in the full operation of the of the retail outlet within the setting of a college shopping mall.
Over the two days, over 5000 people - including students along with a wide community of parents, teachers and children from 30 other colleges and universities from the Sharjah University City and the neighbouring emirates attended the Mini Mall created by the HCT, Women’s College.
Liali Jewellery along with selected other retails was very proud to have gained this opportunity and thanked HCT, Sharjah for the same. There are constant activities lined up at Liali, as a part of their CSR initiatives, and in this case showed their commitment to support the endeavours that encourage the education and development of the young local population of this great nation.
