Libya released 26 Egyptian fishermen, who had been detained for more than a month after their boats had strayed into Libyan waters, an official from the Egyptian foreign ministry said Friday.

The official, who asked not to be identified, said the fishermen were brought home on Thursday.

They are part of a group of 149 Egyptian fishermen who are to be repatriated in phases in accordance with an agreement between the two countries, he said.

At the end of October, the fishermen had mistakenly sailed into Libyan territory where they were arrested -- CAIRO (AFP)
