RABAT (Albawaba) - A major Moroccan trade union warned of social upheaval if the government does not live up to its commitments.
"The government is paying no heed to the deteriorating situation of the Moroccan working classes and is ignoring all their grievances," said the Confederation Democratique du Travail (CDT), which is close to the Socialist party of Prime Minister Abderrahmane Youssoufi.
The authorities must move urgently to solve the workers' problems, especially regarding promotion, salary increases and the return of laborers who were expelled for unionist activities, CDT said.
The Union also blasted the government's failure to implement an agreement it signed earlier this year with the trade unions and the employers' association (CGEM).
The CDT warned that social upheavals may erupt, unless the authorities act immediately to solve the plight of the working class.
"The working class is ready to take the necessary measures to defend its social and material rights," said the union. CDT, Morocco's largest trade union, has remained faithful to its principles and is fervently defending the workers, despite the participation of its mother party, the Socialist Union of Popular Forces, in the government.
Moroccan workers have already launched strikes in several sectors, mainly in transport and education. The Union was poised to declare a nation-wide strike last month, but last minute negotiations with the government averted the move.
However, the situation is now likely to get worse as the government failed to keep its promises and did not take any action to improve the workers' conditions
