In Iran, at least 108 Iranian parliament members extended their resignations on Sunday in protest of the mass disqualification of candidates from standing in the parliamentary elections on February 20.

According to the official IRNA news agency, the MPs announced their resignations in a joint letter, read by

Tehran MP Mohsen Mir-Damadi and the MP from central Isfahan Rajab-Ali Mazrouie.

This came a day after President Mohammad Khatami, suffering severe back pain, called off an emergency cabinet meeting that was scheduled to focus on Iran's deepening crisis over the parliamentary elections.

The resignations were said to be effective immediately. However, the Iranian constitution does not stipulate for such an eventuality and it was unclear if the resignations have to be accepted by another authority or if they are final. (Albawaba.com)
