McAfee’s Artemis Technology Proves Need For Real-Time, In-The-Cloud Protection for Consumers and Business

McAfee Inc. (NYSE: MFE), the world’s largest dedicated digital security company, today announced that its real-time malware detection technology, McAfee® Artemis Technology, has resulted in significantly increased security for its customers, from consumers to large enterprises.

Independent tests have given Artemis extremely high ratings. A recent test from AV-Comparatives found that McAfee beat Symantec, Kaspersky, Sophos, Microsoft and every major competitor in total detection percentage rates, while also providing the lowest false-positive rating available.

A recent review in ComputerBild, Germany’s leading technology magazine, also confirmed McAfee’s superiority, naming McAfee as the vendor with the highest malware detection rate, and praised Artemis for returning the fewest number of false positives.

"Customers using Artemis are experiencing a notable increase in protection from a variety of new attacks,” said Jeff Green, Senior Vice President of McAfee Avert® Labs.  “With Artemis, there is no lag time – we can protect you within minutes of when malware is in the wild.”

Artemis has fundamentally changed the way malware is detected, by providing customers with real-time threat protection.  Artemis is an Internet-based service that provides active protection on the fly when a computer gets hit by malicious computer code, without requiring a traditional, scheduled update of threat signatures to be installed on the machine.  Artemis is handling 80 million queries on average every day with 25,000 new malware samples added daily.

Traditionally, malware detection has relied on databases with threat signatures installed on a user’s PC and updated on a regular basis. This traditional approach to detecting malware does not suffice with today’s malware onslaught – where the delay between DAT updates can allow for a crippling infection to take hold of a consumer’s computer or even a company’s network.

“Today’s threat landscape doesn’t give you the luxury of time when it comes to being protected,” said Green.  “Last year alone, 1.6 million unique pieces of malware were detected – a 450 percent increase from the previous year.  McAfee protects customers from these threats faster than any other security vendor.”

Artemis is available as part of McAfee’s security software for PCs and is currently deployed across McAfee’s consumer base. Enterprises are adopting the technology at a rapid pace, as the need for faster and more accurate protection is consistently recognized.
