MECOM, focused telecommunications exhibition being held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre closed on April 25th 2007. Preliminary estimates, subject to verification, indicate visitor numbers between 6,000 and 7,000 over the course of the four day event. The exhibition was attended by senior international delegates, telecommunication professionals, procurement decision makers and armed forces personnel.

Visitor Ahmed Al Zaabi, Telecommunications Engineer in the UAE armed forces, endorsed MECOM as an excellent platform to source new technology. “The UAE army is always interested in keeping abreast of the latest developments, and I am keenly interested in wireless technology on display at MECOM, and believe it to have several potential applications in the context of the armed forces,” he said.

The event was also visited by Brigadier Professor Sheikh Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa, Director of Royal Medical Services, Kingdom of Bahrain, and by Marwan Hamadeh, Lebanon’s Minister of Telecommunications.

Exhibitor reaction to MECOM was highly favorable, with Faisal Hammoud, Regional Sales Manager, Dubai Internet City commenting, “MECOM is a dedicated ICT and telecommunications show that has facilitated our interaction with big telecommunications players in the region. The event’s execution and high quality has attracted the right exhibitors and visitors, cementing DIC’s support for the event. As regional ICT and technology hub, DIC will be a part of MECOM 2008, which we are certain will be even bigger.”

David Hirst, Exhibition Director for MECOM, said, “Telecommunications and broadband will create a new economy sector worth $70 billion in revenue by 2015 for the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region, and MECOM is setting up to be the de facto regional platform and forum for the rapidly growing sector. We are looking to capitalize on the success of MECOM 2007 to host an even bigger international showcase next year.”

The next MECOM will be held at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) from 27th-30th April 2008.
