Mexico's foreign minister announced that she is coming to Cairo, accompanied by the relatives of the victims who were "accidentally" killed by Egypt's security forces.

Minister Claudia Ruiz Massieu made the announcement in the early hours of Tuesday on Twitter.

Her visit comes after joint Egyptian police and army forces "accidentally" killed 12 people, including Mexican tourists, on Sunday. The only figure provided by an Egyptian official on the number of deaths among the Mexican tourists is seven.

Egypt's Interior Ministry said the incident took place while forces were chasing "terrorists" in al-Wahat area in the western desert and that the group was in a restricted area.

The incident prompted Mexico's condemnation. Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto described it as “tragic” and demanded that the Egyptian government conduct “a thorough investigation.”

Egypt's Foreign Minister Sameh Shukri has offered his condolences to his Mexican counterpart. He did add that the tourists were “in a restricted operations area."

Egypt vowed to conduct an investigation into the deaths.
