More than 100 people were killed in fighting earlier this week for the control of the southeastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) town of Pepa, rebel chief Sylvain Buki told AFP Saturday.

Rwandan troops backing the rebel Congolese Rally for Democracy claimed Friday they had retaken the town from forces loyal to DRC president Laurent Kabila.

Kabila's troops took control of the town at the end of October.

Rebels backed by Uganda and Rwanda have been fighting Kabila's government and his allies since 1998. The rebels control vast swathes of the north and east of the country -- KIGALI (AFP)
