More than 300 youths from all over Morocco are gathered in Rabat, the capital city, as part of a national forum against torture.
The meeting, held under theme "Together for Human Rights Together against Torture", seeks to publicize the role of the World's human rights watch dog, Amnesty International, and its efforts to spread education in general and education on human rights in particular.
Participants are also studying how to reinforce the role of human rights organizations in the fight against all forms of torture and in preserving children's rights.
"We will raise the issue of impunity, part of our mobilization against torture," Mr. Ahmed Chajii, from the organizing committee, said.
Shortly after coming to power in July 1999, Morocco's young King Mohammed VI set up a special committee to extend compensation to the victims of torture at the hands of the authorities. The compensation, set at $600 monthly, is part of an effort to change Morocco's bleak human rights record.
However, rising voices in Morocco are demanding that all those who tortured the people detained for political reasons in the 1980's and the 1990's are brought before the courts.
The Amnesty International-sponsored meeting in Rabat, that will wind up on September 13th, will submit its final recommendations to the authorities.
