Egypt’s President, Husni Mubarak headed to Syria before noon Wednesday at the end of his few hours visit to Jordan during which he held talks with King Abdallah II on bilateral relations and the latest developments in the Middle East.

Mubarak arrived in Amman ahead of a widely awaited speech by U.S. President George W. Bush to unveil a new Middle East policy.

At the end of the meeting, both leaders voiced strong opposition to any plan for a "provisional" Palestinian state, and called on US President to announce a "just and balanced" Middle East peace initiative.

"We cannot understand how we can set up a provisional state. Any Palestinian state must have full sovereignty over Palestinian territory," Jordanian Foreign Minister Marwan Moasher told a press conference Wednesday.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Maher added: "Only Israeli occupation (of Arab land) must be provisional".

Mubarak was due to hold similar talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, officials said.
