Lessons yet to be learnt from Srebrenica massacre
World Cup must remember the 15th Anniversary of Srebrenica massacre

"The World Cup finals tonight between the Netherlands and Spain must observe
one minute silence on the 15th Anniversary of the massacre of Bosnian
Muslims (Bosniaks). It is all the more important as it was the Dutch troops
that looked on as the massacre to took place," said the Editor of The Muslim
News, Ahmed J Versi.

"We are constantly being reminded that Europe has a Judeo-Christian heritage
and values. Not only did the West looked on as the atrocities in Srebrenica
were carried out, but we, including our Tory Government continued to impose
arms embargo against the Bosnian Muslims whilst the killing spree and rapes
were taking place," said Versi.

"We must never forget the act of genocide that happened at Srebrenica. It
was a crime that shamed Europe," Prime Minister David Cameron said on the
15th anniversary of the massacre of 8,000 Bosniak Muslims by Christian
Serbs.

"We owe it to the victims to learn the lesson of Srebrenica: that evil must
be confronted if humanity is to be protected. We owe it to the victims to
ensure that those indicted f or this appalling crime are pursued
relentlessly until they are brought to justice," Cameron said.

"As we look to the future, we pledge never to forget the past, and to do all
in our power to ensure that sure an atrocity can never be repeated," Cameron
said.

Baroness Warsi, Minister Without Portfolio and Co-Chairman of the
Conservative Party is in Srebrenica on behalf of the British Government to
commemorate the genocide at Srebrenica.

"It will be a heart-wrenching event, but this will not simply be about
commemorating the dead. This will be a sign of our support, our sympathy,
and our unstinting solidarity with the population of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
It will also reaffirm a fundamental point: such evil acts must never be
allowed to happen again," said Warsi.

Versi added that Islamophobia and Islamophobic attacks are on the increase
in Europe. "It seems we still haven't learnt from the Bosnian massacre.
Europe must wake up to anti-Islamic anti-Muslim attacks in their countries,
before it is too late," said Versi.

The genocide, the worst in Europe since World War Two, happened in a
UN-protected 'safe area' as 400 armed Dutch 'peacekeepers' looked on. At the
time, Bosnia was subjected to an arms embargo supported by Britain's
previous Conservative Government.

Bosnian Serb Commander Ratko Mladic, whose forces carried out the massacre
remains at large.
