A new selection procedure for Haj permits is ensuring that more people living on Egypt's border towns can participate in the coming Haj. In Egypt, like in other Islamic countries, the issuance of Haj permits is a major source of anxiety. Demand for the tickets always exceeds the number supplied by the Saudi government to each country. This year, Egypt received permits for 12,000 people. Dr. Aminah al-Gundi, the Social Affairs Minister, said that new guidelines for issuing the permits will allow more people from the Marsa Matrouh region on the Libyan border as well as resident of the Northern and Southern Sinai districts to fulfill this religious obligation.
