NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Seeks to Strengthen International Ties at 2009 Arab Health Expo
Jan. 26–29 Health Care Exhibition in Dubai Is Billed as the Largest in the Middle East
NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital’s physicians and business development leadership are participating in the 2009 Arab Health Expo with the goal of exchanging health care expertise and building relationships with individuals and organizations in the Middle East and beyond.
The Hospital currently maintains international affiliations with hospitals in Qatar and Turkey, as well as in France, the Philippines, South Korea and Tanzania. In addition, the Hospital’s Executive Registry program provides business travelers and others with an international network of more than 100 international hospitals and physician affiliates in more than 30 countries.
Notably, NewYork-Presbyterian’s academic partner Weill Cornell Medical College has established the first medical school in Qatar, representing the first time American university has offered a medical degree overseas. In May of 2008, Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar graduated its inaugural class of 15 newly minted M.D.s.
The Arab Health Expo, billed as the largest health care exhibition in the Middle East, will be held on Jan. 26–29 in Dubai. In excess of 2,500 exhibitors from 65 countries and 50,000 visitors are expected.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to participate in this year’s Arab Health Expo, and we look forward to working closely with the region’s health care leaders in order to advance treatments for patients everywhere,” says Dr. Kenneth Ouriel, senior vice president for International Operations at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
Dr. Ouriel will speak on “Challenges of Retaining Patients in the GCC [Gulf Cooperation Council] and the Impact of Private/Public Partnerships” on Jan. 26 at 4 p.m. at the Expo’s “Leaders in Healthcare” session.
“Eight NewYork-Presbyterian physicians will be featured at the Expo’s Surgical and Pediatrics Conferences, presenting on topics including new minimally invasive surgical technologies, the operating room of the future, interventional neuro-radiology, prenatal pediatrics, pediatric cardiology, cardiac surgery and transplantation,” says Jose F. Nunez, vice president of International and Corporate Health at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.
The presenting team, who are all also faculty at Weill Cornell Medical College and/or Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, includes Drs. Richard L. Berkowitz, Mary D’Alton, Jean Emond, William Hellenbrand, Richard A. Polin, Jan Quaegebeur, Howard Riina, and Charles Stolar.
Together with the Hospital’s physicians and business development staff, Dr. Oriel and Mr. Nunez can be found at the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital Arab Health Expo booth in Zabeel Hall, booth ZN20.
