Gunmen attacked an Iraqi checkpoint northeast of Baghdad Sunday, killing six members of the Iraqi national guard and injuring four, police said, according to Reuters. They said one attacker was also killed in the gunbattle near Baquba, some 65 kilometers northeast of the capital.

Elsewhere, a U.S. C-130 transport plane was hit by gunfire after takeoff from Baghdad airport Sunday and one US national aboard was killed, the U.S. army said. A US soldier died in a rocket strike on a base in Baghdad at 3:00 pm (1100 GMT), the military said.

In another incident, two Iraqi children died and eight were wounded as two mortars landed near the Sheraton Hotel, AFP reported. A pack of boys and young men were playing football when the mortars burst, said Doctor Walid Hamid at the Al-Kindi hospital. (Albawaba.com)
